See you TOMORROW!

Meet Marissa Barnhart of emByMarissa...
I’ve always been artsy and crafty, but I never considered selling my work until I began creating daily. I was going through a rut in life — I was recently graduated from college and having difficulty finding jobs in my field, and I was feeling really disheartened. I usually turned to writing or drawing, but I had developed carpal tunnel in my hands, and it was affecting several areas of my life. My happiness has always been linked to my creativity, and I was feeling stunted and frustrated. When I discovered fluid art, my creativity was reignited. This is an art form that’s not only fun to do and mesmerizing to look at, but also is easy on my hands. And I can create more often. I’ve been painting and selling as emByMarissa for nearly a year.
Art has been an escape for me since I was young. I’m only 25, but I’ve experienced a lot of hardship. Growing up, I was subjected to abuse, domestic violence and, for a while, poverty. Those experiences led to a lot of anxiety and depression throughout my adolescence and adult life. Creating is my therapy. It’s how I heal my soul. Whenever things start to pile up and feel like too much, art saves me. It’s one of the biggest blessings in my life, and I hope I can bring joy and some form of healing for people who enjoy my work.
I’ve always been fascinated by how things are made, and I have to try it for myself. From painting to paper quilling to sculpting to knitting, there are few art and crafts I haven’t tried. And because it’s cathartic for me, I keep going and continue exploring new art forms. I’ve recently added more resin art to my inventory, and I’m excited to introduce my new pieces. This will be my first show with the Avant-Garde Art & Craft Show, and I can’t think of a better place to showcase my work.
In the future, I would love to open an art studio and hold classes and dedicate time for art students and other artists to work in a safe space. One thing I hear a lot is, “I’m not artistic; I could never do that.” I’m a strong believer that if someone is passionate enough about something, even if it currently requires skills that aren’t currently in their toolbox, they can develop those skills and become an expert. There’s nothing that people can’t learn. Trial, error, determination and an open mind are key. I want to create a space where I can continue my own art journey while also encouraging and promoting others.

Meet Gina Dean of Mamma G’s Gourmet Caramel Corn…
My name is Gina Dean owner of Mamma G's Gourmet Caramel Corn. I am a mother of four who recently went through a divorce and needed to figure out a way to support myself and still keep the time for my children that I wanted and needed. I started my business in November of 2018, although I had done a few crafts shows in years prior. This show will be my first Avant-Garde show. I look forward to showcasing my product and meeting other like-minded creators.
My children are an inspiration behind my caramel creations. I love to take all the goodies I make for my them and turn them into caramel corn. I have always loved to create things and cook I just put my own twist on it to make my creations unique. I discovered that people love delicious and unique homemade items so I just added that uniqueness to my caramel corn. I also get my inspiration from my love to cook and create. My children, family, and friends also have given me ideas and suggestions that I then figure out how to turn into caramel corn goodies.

I hope to become a household name known for my delicious unique caramel creations. I have been showcased at Duma Meat's Market in Mogadore in November and December. You can also find my product at Erie Island Coffee shop in Rootstown. I have my first wedding shower coming in May along with all the shows I am doing. My message to everyone is it's never too late to follow your dreams. If you do what you love the sky is the limit!

Coming to you This Weekend Chagrin Falls!

Meet Brady Safenovitz...
I am 17 years old and go to Beachwood High School, I have had a passion for cooking and chocolate making for over 5 years. I first became interested in this field when I made a small gift for a teacher and they absolutely loved it.
My teacher inspired me to develop a business, one which combines something I love to do and the enjoyment I get from delivering products that people are excited by. I have sold independently to family, friends, and local business in the past and this will be my first Avant-Garde show- I am looking very forward to it!

Meet Alicia Alford...
Hello, I'm Alicia! I am 36 years old and work with my amazing mom! It’s because of her that I’ve been able to put my creative juices to work!! I started my sewing adventures when I was 9 years old when my grandmother taught/helped me make my first quilt! Then about 12 years ago I started doing more quilts alongside my mom! And it has grown from there now doing towels (that my grandmother did) that I grew up having in our kitchen as a kid!
The towels that I make are basically a tribute to my grandmother! She made a version of these when I was a kid and so many of our friends and family had them in their homes and after she passed I wanted to continue these amazing towels with my friends and family! My grandmother was a seamstress many years ago and all through my childhood my mom would do different crafts and creations and now as an adult I get to work side by side with my mom on so many projects!
As funny as it may sound my talents have found me, and I let the towels and fabrics tell me what to do and things just evolve from there!! If it’s towels I look for towels that speak to my heart and the hearts of my friends. When it comes to custom quilts we carefully listen to what the person is looking for and then let the fabric do the talking! If it’s towels I look for towels that speak to my heart and the hearts of my friends! Meet Susan from...
Susan grew up in a very creative and musical family.  Living in Oberlin, Ohio afforded. Her many opportunities in the arts, unlimited visits to the Allen Art Museum, concerts and plays. To expand her creativity and energize her love of style and fashion, Susan took up sewing as a young girl.  Her projects expanded to tailoring suits and coats along with formal wear and was awarded first place for her designs.
While raising her girls and working in the family business, Susan needed a creative outlet.  She always created the perfect little dress for her girls.  Susan found herself in many interior design projects for her home as well as assisting others. While living in Charleston, SC, Susan was inspired to pursue one of her unfulfilled passions-designing and hand crafting jewelry.  In the pass Eighteen years; Susan has studied with many of the masters from all over the world.  Her travels and many bead conventions make it possible for her to purchase a vast array of materials for one-of-a-kind unique pieces. Susan is truly passionate about sharing her gifts in creating the perfect jewelry piece for YOU!

Meet Melissa Tresler from Zim Woodworking...
Zim Woodworking is a natural offshoot of Gerry's previous business. Gerry has owned his own business as a remodeling contractor for 40+ years. In the past few years he has been slowly phasing out of some of the more demanding aspects, such as roofing. He decided that he has spent enough years running up and down ladders, and that he  would like to focus more of his attention on creating things. He has always offered custom woodworking in his remodeling business, so over the years he has developed a nice wood shop. Now he found more time to spend in it! The more time he spends, the more he enjoys it, and 4 years later, here we are.
Our products range from cutting boards to picture frames to jewelry organizers to planters and many things in between. Most products originate as a request from family or friends. Then as Gerry makes one of them, for efficiency he makes a whole bunch of them! Many products start off as a custom request, but demand takes them into a stock item.
The products we carry are made using native Northeast Ohio lumber. Gerry doesn't see the need to use exotic wood when we have such a diverse and beautiful selection of wood right in our neighborhood. It is always fun to go shopping for pieces of wood. Sometimes he comes home with pieces that he doesn't know what he is going to build with them, but they were too beautiful or too cool to leave behind! At some point he will look at that piece of wood, and it will tell him what it wants to be! As of right now, Gerry has so many ideas of things he wants to make, but not enough time in the day to do all of them. But don't be afraid to ask if he can make it - whatever "it" is - Gerry loves a challenge!

Meet Laurie Hejduk from Luvin Lavendar...
Luvin Lavender Farms llc is a family owned farm in Madison Ohio. It is in its 3rd generation. The farm over many years has supported the Hejduk family  by raising a variety of crops and farm animals over its 100 year span.  We began raising lavender to bring pollinators to our vegetable crops 8 years ago.It has become a passion of support for our pollinators and also a lovely way to open the farm up to people to experience the beauty of lavender and all its natural benefits.
We give tours to groups, and the farm is open during the summer with a gift shop.  It provide people an opportunity to walk areas of the  farm and also  educate about providing safe havens for many types of pollinators. We distill our essential oil in late summer at the farm for people to see how essential oil is created. This is our 2nd  show with Avant-Garde Art & Craft Shows. As our harvest increases this allows us to create new product lines from our lavender from culinary to gift items. It takes 3 years for our lavender to begin producing enough lavender bud  to be able to increase our product line. From field to home we do not add any harmful chemicals and stay as natural as possible to provide a safe haven for our pollinators and customers. No dyes of chemicals go into our products.
Our farm is growing yearly in ideas and gardens for our many visitors, we provide a lavender festival in July always the weekend after the 4th. We are working on a formal garden for weddings, we provide an opportunity for photos shoots in the lavender. (refer to photo guidelines on webpage) For us to continue increasing our product line we will be adding more lavender over the next few years. Our goal is to have around 3-5 acres of lavender.

Meet Rebecca Walker from Waves and Breakers...
My husband and I live in the lovely little town of Garrettsville. We met taking ballroom dancing lessons, and have one sweet little cat named Rory. When I’m not beach-combing, I’m a Doctor of Audiology with a penchant for dizziness and balance disorders. While beach-combing, I collect what some call lucky stones, and was excited to learn that these are actually the otoliths of sheepshead fish, part of their (and microscopically our) balance organ. I love how my passions blend together!  I started hunting for beach glass in the spring of 2014. I was familiar with seaglass but didn’t realize the abundance of these treasures that washed ashore on the beaches of Lake Erie. I tried my hand at wire-wrapping that summer.
This is my debut exhibition with Avant-Garde Art and Craft shows! I’m excited to participate alongside such unique artisans! The inspiration to create comes from something deep internally. I’ve always been artsy but I can’t actually articulate what drives me. It really is something that happens when the mood strikes. I try to work in the sunlight on weekend mornings, but I’ve also had ideas hit me right before bed, often keeping me up later than anticipated. Music helps with the process and I play whatever my current mood calls for. The drive to create is also stoked by perusing a variety of museums, galleries, and shows. They bring me great joy and rejuvenate my creativity.

I’ve been blessed with a creative nature my entire life. For this endeavor I turned to YouTube and Pinterest to learn some basic wirewrapping techniques and then made them my own.
It’s funny because wire-wrapping requires a good bit of improvisation, and for as spontaneous as I can be at times, I’ve never been relaxed with myself enough to really improvise anything. Initially I felt the organic styles I started out using clashed with my more classic preferences, but I’ve learned to bend myself to work with the unique shape of each individual piece and to bring it into my own style. I find so many metaphors while on the beach and while working with each unique piece. My work primarily showcases how beauty, hope, and resilience may be found in the broken; that what typically starts as a generic bottle develops into a gem-like bobble, with a glow and a smoothness, internal and external beauty, despite the tumultuous conditions it encounters over decades of tumbling and buffing in the harsh conditions of the waves and sand.

Meet Karyn Faranda from Incantations by Karyn...
My name is Karyn Faranda and My company, Incantations by Karyn, is in its first year of operation and I am a lifelong artist who is educated in art of all different mediums but when I started this company I decided to focus on several mediums of handcrafted jewelry, utilizing semi-precious gems and precious metals as well as beaded work, hand stamped jewelry , wire wrapped jewelry, leather smithing and just about every facet you can think of. I also specialize in refurbishing, repurposing or completely restoring antique and vintage furniture. I love what I do and I love my clients and customers.
What inspires me to create is where I've been, am currently and where I am going as well as the experiences I have endured (positive & negative) thus far. My creative process includes some freeform and some is well thought out and collaborated with my business partner. Hopefully in five years I'll be very successful as an online company or even opening a storefront to display and sell all of my creations. That it's never too late for anyone to go after their dream and that there is always hope if we remain positive and willing to learn from our experiences.

It's Show Time! Chagrin Falls Vendors Shine!

Meet Robyn Peterson Durlin from NARFdesign...
NARFdesign stands for “Nearly All Robyn’s Fantastic Design” which represents nearly everything I create outside of working as a web graphic designer. Much of the creative inspiration for NARFdesign comes from my love of the ocean and the beach having grown up near the coast of Maine. Northeast Ohio has been my home for the last 7 years; the Western Reserve and proximity to Lake Erie remind me a lot of New England!

My craft hobby really took off while planning my wedding on Pensacola Beach, I handmade our wedding invitations, most of the decorations, and my starfish hairpiece which got me hooked on making beach themed accessories.  year ago I finally decided to follow everyone’s advice saying “you should sell that on Etsy!”, and it just grew from there! Recently I’ve been making nautical rope belts, jewelry using sea/beach glass, recycled glass bottle crafts, and stained glass. I try to upcycle materials as much as possible to give them a second life.

New England has such a vibrant and strong local handmade culture with a true appreciation for genuine handcrafted works by local people, and I am trying to incorporate as much of that influence as I can into my designs here in Ohio. The sea/beach glass in each one of my jewelry designs can be traced to a specific coastal region, and primarily features glass that I have either hand-picked or sourced myself (thanks to my friends and family who also enjoy beach combing).

This is my first Avant-Garde Art & Craft show, also my first craft show ever! I’m very excited to meet everyone and display my designs in person! My craft business has continued to surprise and amaze me over the course of the last year, and I hope to be able to continue and expand on my product lines, I have quite a few ideas I would like to explore!

Meet Keni Scherbinski from Keni Scherbinski Lettering and Design...
My name is Keni Scherbinski, I live in Medina, Ohio with my rad husband. I love reading, yoga, bicycling, backpacking, & camping (basically anything outdoors!) I moved to Ohio 10 years ago, and it is home. I LOVE my small town and take a great deal of pride in supporting it.

I have been drawing since I could hold a pencil. When I was a kid I always told my mom I wanted to grow up to be an artist, which she fully supported. This will be my 2nd Avante-Garde show. I participated in the Columbus show and had a great time meeting other artists, I enjoyed it so much I wanted to do another!
My creativity is inspired by flowers, trees, weeds...everything is an inspiration! I love feathers, dream catchers, & bones... As a kid, my mom would create beautiful jewelry from porcupine quills we'd find, or homemade beads we'd make and bake to sell at native American pow wows. she always encouraged my sisters and I to help, that's always stayed with me!
In 5 years I hope to still be an independent artist, and to be continually inspired to create new pieces that inspire others to love their roots, & to go for their dreams.

Meet Lynn Rogers Vail from LRVdesigns...

I left the corporate world in 2005.  Thinking my right brain attributes were lost forever, I searched for a creative path that would lead me to discover an artistic activity that  I could be passionate about.  I found it in polymer clay.

Polymer is a versatile art medium used to create jewelry, sculptures, cane work and mixed media art pieces.  It is a man-made modeling material and remains soft and malleable until it is cured in a low temperature oven.

Polymer comes in a plethora of colors and can be blended into gorgeous palettes with the use of a pasta machine.  The clay can be sculpted, extruded, shaved, carved, stamped, painted or silk screened. There are many methods used to create detailed, repetitive patterns into a cane that is then sliced and made into a piece of art.
Imitative techniques can also be used to create the look of stone, wood, leather and an unlimited array of items found in nature.  Finishing can be done by sanding and buffing the item to an brilliant shine.

Each piece is unique. One of a kind.  Truly original. That's what I LOVE about polymer clay.

Meet Bob and Kristin Barnes from Sweet Bean Candies...
‘Sweet Bean’ candies is husband + wife team, Bob + Kristin Barnes.

At Sweet Bean we focus on handmade filled chocolates and bean to bar chocolate, with the occasional marshmallow or other baked confection thrown in. We create the treats we love to eat. We hope you’ll love ‘em too.

Kristin is responsible for the hand-painted molded chocolates and other treats. Bob is the primary craft chocolate maker, roasting and grinding cacao beans into scratch-made chocolate bars.

(Kristin) I’ve been making chocolates for friends and family since 2011, but we started Sweet Bean in FEB 2013. A member of the inaugural class of ECDI and CCLK’s Food Business Incubator, we made our public debut at the Cleveland Flea in SEP 2013. We recently began making our own chocolate, from the bean, and sold our first scratch-made bar in April of 2015. (Bob)
To us, working with chocolate is therapeutic. My husband Bob and I both currently have full time jobs… we come home at night and work with chocolate – who can complain about that? Creating something that brings a smile to someone’s face – first when they see it, and then when they taste it, is the real treat.

How we got into our craft.. (Kristin) Though we're originally from Cleveland, we were living in Boston in 2011, and it was actually a Groupon – to visit a local chocolate shop and make candies for Christmas - that got me really excited about chocolate. I spent the afternoon with a chocolatier learning how to temper and mold chocolate. I brought my creations home that night and told my husband about how much fun I had had… that Christmas he bought me some molds and a tempering machine. Any excuse to make candies, I did - holidays, co-workers birthdays, Fridays…lol.

Once Sweet Bean started gaining some momentum, Bob started researching making our own chocolate from scratch… he’d had an interest in roasting coffee and saw the similarities there – selecting beans by region and developing flavors through the roasting process… it was a natural fit.

(Kristin) I’ve always enjoyed baking and eating sweets, and I’ve always enjoyed art. I studied fine arts in college, dabbling in sculpture, ceramics and painting… marrying the two together was literally the sweet spot. I enjoy the creative outlet that painting and molding the chocolates provides, creating something from scratch - and there’s satisfaction when someone tastes our creation as well.
Our creative process... Hand-crafted chocolate molding is truly an art. It’s a multi-step process, with many variables, and is an exact science. We usually begin by determining the flavors we’ll be making, and then assigning each flavor a color palette. We prepare the molds by buffing and hand-painting them with colored cocoa butter – this is how we achieve our signature marbled appearance. Chocolate needs to be tempered, a series of heating and cooling steps while melting the chocolate to achieve the shiny, and stable consistency required to hold its shape without melting in your fingers. We temper by hand, and once the perfect temperature is reached – we keep the chocolate in temper while working quickly to mold and fill the candies.

Chocolate making is just as disciplined. Starting with raw cacao, beans are selected, sorted then roasted, similar to coffee - paying careful attention to time and temperature to achieve the desired results and flavors. Once cooled, beans are cracked and winnowed to remove the shells – leaving behind the cocoa nibs. Nibs are then ground in a melanger (stone grinder) with cocoa butter, and/or milk and flavorings to create different varieties or milk or dark chocolate. This process can take from 10 – 24 hours! Finally the chocolate is tempered and molded into bars, similar to the bon-bon process. Lastly, we hand-wrap our bars, and package our bon-bons in our signature wrap and clear boxes.

In five years our goals... We hope to have a brick + mortar sweet shop, a small-batch chocolate factory – where we make and mold our chocolate and serve other sweets and coffee. A spot where you can come and enjoy a little luxury, and see how the chocolate is made. I’d also like to teach others how to work with chocolate, just like I was introduced back in Boston…

The message behind our work is enjoy! We’ve always thought about our candies as an affordable luxury… we think you deserve to take some time out of your day, to relax, admire and enjoy one perfect bite... (or two).

Meet Lana Myers from Absinthe and Laudanum Apothecary LLC...
By profession, I am an English teacher (I have taught on the collegiate level and most recently, on the high school level).  However, I have a diverse background in that I majored in Japanese linguistics and Art History.  I also possess my MA in Modern British Literature.

I love design and fashion--these loves began at a young age when I was a high school student in Japan and subsequently developed after spending three more years in Japan, lived in Jerusalem and have traveled extensively throughout the UK and Europe.

I have been designing and creating my own hair accessories for years.  At the New York Comic Con last year, while helping a friend who was a vendor, I was dressed in various Lolita fashion outfits (generally Late Victorian Period) when it was suggested to me that I open my own business.

My biggest inspirations are poetry, literature, nature, my travels, and my loved ones all inspire me to create! My creative process is organic and fluid.
My goal in five years is I'd love to go back to teaching while at the same time, maintain my business through my Etsy shop, Arts and Crafts events and Comic Cons and Anime Conventions!

The message behind my work is: Live.  Experience all that this world has to offer.  Dream.
